Asphalt Built for Till Soil and Freeze-Thaw

Asphalt paving in Noblesville has to cope with ground that holds water and winters that keep freezing and thawing it. Indianapolis, the nearest long-term weather station, averages a January low of about 21 degrees and a January high of about 36, so many winter days cross the freezing line twice. Each crossing lets water in cracks and in the soil under the driveway expand and shrink. Blacktop on a firm, drained base rides through that. Blacktop on a wet, thin base heaves, cracks and breaks apart at the edges.

The ground under a Hamilton County driveway

The flat to gently rolling land around Noblesville was left by glaciers. USDA soil scientists describe Crosby soils, one of the most widespread series on central Indiana's till plains, as silty material over loamy glacial till that is somewhat poorly drained, with a perched water table 0.5 to 2 feet down in winter and spring. In low spots, Brookston soils are poorly drained, and their water table can reach the surface. Soil like that stays soft after rain and loses strength when it freezes, so we test the subgrade on every job and replace soft, wet areas with compacted stone before any asphalt is placed.

HomeGuide's driveway guide describes a typical residential build as 6 to 8 inches of compacted gravel base under 2 to 3 inches of asphalt, with 8 to 10 inches of base and 3 to 4 inches of asphalt where heavier vehicles park. On poorly drained ground we lean toward the thicker end of the base and set the grade so water runs off the edges instead of soaking in along them.

A city that doubled in a decade

Noblesville grew from 28,590 residents in 2000 to 51,969 in 2010 and 69,604 in 2020, and the Census Bureau estimated 76,111 by July 2025. Most of the driveways in town are therefore one of two kinds: subdivision driveways from the 2000s and 2010s that are reaching the age for overlays and serious crack work, and older driveways near downtown and along the White River where the base itself may be worn out. About 71 percent of homes in the city are owner-occupied, and many sit in neighborhoods with homeowners associations. If yours has design rules about driveway width or materials, we plan the quote around them.

The street, the right-of-way and 811

The strip between your property line and the street is public right-of-way. The City of Noblesville's Street Department handles work there through an encroachment permit: the application is filed with plans, the city wants 48 hours' notice before work begins, and the finished work is inspected before the city accepts it. If your project stays on your side of the apron, that may not come into play at all. If it touches the curb cut, sidewalk or street edge, we tell you at the estimate and confirm the current requirements with the city first. Under Indiana's dig law, which changed on January 1, 2025, anyone excavating must give Indiana 811 at least two full working days' notice before digging, so every tear-out on our schedule starts with a locate ticket.

When paving happens

Hot mix needs warm ground to compact properly, so most full installations here run from spring through fall. Sealcoating needs dry days between roughly 50 and 95 degrees. We schedule around both, and we would rather move a job a week than lay asphalt on cold, wet ground.

What a typical driveway replacement includes

  • Measuring the area and checking slope, low spots and the street connection
  • Calling in the 811 locate and marking the work area
  • Breaking out and hauling away the old asphalt or concrete
  • Digging out soft subgrade and replacing it with compacted stone
  • Grading and compacting the aggregate base
  • Placing and rolling hot-mix asphalt to the thickness on your quote
  • Finishing edges and tying into the garage slab and apron
  • Telling you when to drive on it and when it can be sealed

Common Questions

How much does a new asphalt driveway cost around Noblesville?

HomeGuide's national figures run $5 to $12 or more per square foot for standard hot-mix asphalt, which works out to $2,000 to $4,800 for a 400-square-foot driveway and $5,000 to $12,000 for 1,000 square feet. Tear-out, extra base work for soft soil, and the distance to the street all move the price. Your written estimate is the figure that counts.

What is an asphalt paver?

It is the tracked or wheeled machine that lays hot asphalt. Trucks dump mix into its hopper, conveyors carry it to the back, and a heated screed spreads it to an even width and depth before rollers compact it. On small residential jobs some areas are also spread by hand with rakes and lutes.

Is asphalt or concrete better for a central Indiana driveway?

Both work here. HomeGuide lists asphalt at $5 to $12 per square foot with a 15 to 30 year life and concrete at $6 to $15 with 30 to 40 years. Asphalt flexes with freeze-thaw and is easier to patch and resurface; concrete lasts longer but costs more up front and is harder to repair. Some HOAs require one or the other, so check your covenants.

Can you pave over my old driveway?

If the base is solid and the surface is just worn, an overlay is often the right call and, per HomeGuide, typically saves 20 to 30 percent over replacement. If the driveway has alligator cracking, ruts or soft spots, the base has failed and an overlay will crack again. We check before recommending either.

How soon can I drive on new asphalt?

Usually after two to three days, longer in hot weather. Avoid turning your wheels while parked, keep trailer jacks and kickstands off the surface, and stay off the edges for the first several weeks while the asphalt hardens.

When should a new driveway be sealed?

Not right away. HomeGuide advises waiting 3 to 6 months so the asphalt can cure, then resealing every 2 to 10 years depending on the sealer and the weather. Sealing too often builds up a layer that can crack and peel.

Where We Work

Noblesville is home base. We work across Hamilton County, including Fishers, Carmel, Westfield, Cicero, Arcadia, Atlanta and Sheridan, and east and south into Anderson, Pendleton, Lapel, Ingalls, Fortville, McCordsville and Lawrence. Each place has its own mix of housing ages, soils and street rules. A town in the Morse Reservoir area deals with different drainage than a subdivision on the flat fields east of Fishers, and a county seat with brick downtown streets has different access questions than a new-build cul-de-sac. The town pages below lay out what we know about each one.
